Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Malfunction of mind or body (ADHD) can be characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity that occurs in academic, occupational and social settings.
Children who have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Malfunction of mind or body (ADHD) exhibit degrees of inattention or hyperactivity/impulsivity that are abnormal for their ages. This can result in serious social problems including impairment of family relationships and failure to progress appropriately at school and in other endeavors.
When appropriate diagnostic criteria are used, it is estimated that 3% to 5% of school age children are afflicted with ADHD. However, it is estimated that up to 20% of the school-aged population are affected with some degree of ADHD. Boys are about four times more likely than girls to have symptoms of ADHD.
A variety of biological factors may predispose some children to exhibit symptoms of ADHD with more recent research suggesting that hereditary factors may affect brain functioning in those areas responsible for inhibiting and modulating behavior.
