Cod Liver oil

Cod liver oil is derived from the livers of cod fish. In the late 1800s, prior to the addition of vitamin D to milk, cod liver oil was used successfully to treat and prevent rickets. In the 1950s, more research was carried out into the essential fatty acids Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) contained in Cod liver oil and other oily fish. Currently, fish oil supplements are promoted for a variety of health conditions including hypertriglyceridemia, migraine prophylaxis, psychiatric conditions, secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, various nephropathies, and also for inflammatory conditions such as asthma, gingivitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. Cod liver oil is also used in feeds for poultry and other animals.

Sources of Cod Liver Oil

Cod liver oil is one of nature’s richest sources of natural vitamins A and D. Cod liver oil is used as a dietary supplement and is available in both liquid and capsule forms. Chemically, cod liver oil is a typical fish oil. Cod liver oil is high in omega-3 fatty acids, a valuable aspect in nutrition but one that makes it subject to oxidation, rancidification, and destruction of vitamin A when it is exposed to air. Cod-liver oil is a mixture of glycerides of many fatty acids, predominantly oleic acid, gadoleic acid, and palmitoleic acid. Both vitamin A and vitamin D toxicity can result from the consumption of large amounts of cod-liver oil.

Distinction Between Cod Liver Oil And Fish Oil

The main distinction between cod liver oil and fish oil is that cod liver oil is very high in vitamin D. In warm weather, the sunshine produces high and usually sufficient levels of vitamin D without any supplementation necessary. Consequently, consuming cod liver oil in the warm weather months or climates in not recommended as this can result in an excess of vitamin D in your system and consequential complications. Conversely, in cool weather, your body needs more vitamin D, and so it is recommended that you take cod liver oil versus other types of fish oil in cool weather months or climates.

Cod Liver Oil Benefits

Cod liver oil greatly improves heart function to prevent heart disease and to treat it even in advanced stages, after a heart attack and after heart surgery. Cod liver oil alters the linings of the arteries in such a way as to improve healing after damage.

Many Americans have hypothyroidism and do not know it. Some estimate hypothyroidism affects over half the population of the United States. If you are taking one teaspoon to one tablespoon of cod liver oil a day that is not highly processed, molecularly distilled or concentrated, you will have no trouble with overdosing on vitamin A or any other fat soluble vitamin. Synthetic vitamin A is much more a concern than natural vitamin A.

Cod liver oil is most famous for contributing to bone health, preventing and reversing rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. Before the discovery of cod liver oil as a source of vitamin D, many children suffered greatly with deformed bones. Osteoporosis responds to vitamin D and to cod liver oil. Sufficient elongated omega-3 oils found in cod liver oil are one of the keys to keeping and rebuilding bone. In women, higher levels of vitamin D from cod liver oil improve bone mineral density.
