Hair is composed mainly of protein. A deficiency of protein in the diet can cause a temporary change in the look and texture of hair. When the body again receives adequate protein, the hair will return to its normal color and texture.
Protein consists of a large combination of amino acids. Approximately 12% of hair consists of the amino acid, Cysteine, which helps build hair protein. Cysteine also contains sulfur, a nonmetallic element that occurs widely in nature. Sulfur is present in every cell of plants and animals and is often called "Nature's Beauty Mineral" because it keeps skin and hair soft and smooth. Sulfur is prevalent in keratin, a tough protein substance necessary for the health and maintenance of hair. A lack of sulfur can cause split ends and dull hair.

| Sulfur works with Thiamine, Pantothenic Acid and Biotin, which are needed for metabolism and strong nerve health. It also helps with tissue respiration and works with the liver to secrete bile. Reducing toxic substances in the body improves the health of the entire body, and therefore, is reflected in the hair.
In addition to containing sulfur, Cysteine may also help promote hair growth. While no major studies have been conducted to test the affect of Cysteine on human hair growth, wool producers have found that enriching their sheep's' normal diet with one gram of L-Cysteine daily increases wool production by 14%. L-Cysteine is the natural form of the amino acid Cysteine.
The B-vitamins also influence hair growth, especially Biotin and Inositol. Pantothenic Acid, Folic Acid and Para Amniobenzoic Acid (PABA) help maintain or restore hair's natural color.
Vitamins A and E work together to promote healthy hair. A deficiency or excess amount of Vitamin A may cause hair to become dull, dry, and eventually fall out.
A well-balanced diet is important to healthy hair, but it cannot completely stop hereditary traits such as graying or balding. Good hygiene is important to healthy hair. It should be brushed properly and washed with a mild, protein-enriched shampoo. Hair should also be protected from the elements, such as sun or wind, which can cause dry hair and split ends.
