Fiber Supplements
| Basics |
|
Fiber is the indigestible part of all plant foods, including fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans. It is not found in meat or any other animal foods. Most fiber-rich foods contain both soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber dissolves in water in your intestinal tract, forming a glue-like gel. Insoluble fiber is a good natural laxative because it holds onto water and moves waste quickly through the intestines.
There are seven classification of fiber: bran, cellulose, gum, hemicellulose, lignin, mucilage, and pectin. Each has its own function.

| Possible Side Effects |

Acute overdose: Block absorption of minerals such as iron, calcium, and zinc. It could also cause calcium losses.
Chronic overdose: None
What to do:For an acute overdose, call your doctor, emergency medical services (EMS), or the nearest poison control center immediately. For symptoms of chronic overdose, contact your doctor.
|
| Caution |
|
Always drink at least eight ounces of water with a fiber supplement. If you do not drink plenty of fluids, it can swell and block part of the gastrointestinal tract. It can also block the esophagus.
Do not take fiber supplement if you have trouble swallowing.
Talk to your doctor before taking any fiber supplement, especially if you have diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, bowel obstruction, or any other serious gastrointestinal disorder or if you are taking any medications.
