5 Htp
| Basics |
|
5-Hydroxy Tryptophan or 5-HTP is a forerunner to the neurotransmitter serotonin, which transfers nerve impulses from one cell to another and regulates several vital processes in the body, including sleep, emotional stability, pain sensitivity and addictive cravings. Unlike serotonin alone, 5-HTP can cross the blood-brain barrier. This fact makes it possible for the brain to manufacture more serotonin. It has been proven that increased amounts of 5-HTP can help with weight loss and depression. It is an alternative to prescription drug therapy, which is known to have adverse side effects. 5-HTP can also help in overcoming addiction. The use of many addictive substances, such as tobacco, alcohol, caffeine and certain narcotics, elevates serotonin levels. When these substances are eliminated, serotonin levels drop drastically, causing anxiety and cravings. Taking 5-HTP can stabilize serotonin levels and help minimize the symptoms of withdrawal.
